Succession, The Bear, and Only Murders Lead the 2024 Golden Globes Nominees

The frontrunners are no surprise, but the host for the January 7 ceremony is still TBD.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association may no longer exist, but despite a few setbacks, the 81st Golden Globes remain on schedule. The nominees were announced early Monday morning, with Wilder Valderrama and Cedric the Entertainer splitting up duties alongside HFPA president Helen Hoehne. No real shockers among the frontrunners — but the January 7 ceremony itself carries an air of mystery.

Succession, which concluded its four-season run on May 23, dominates the TV categories with nine nominations, with three of those noms in Best Actor in a Drama alone. The Bear came roaring back this year and earned five nominations in the comedy categories (we’ll have to keep arguing about whether the show is in fact a comedy or a drama amongst ourselves, we suppose). Hulu’s ever-popular Only Murders in the Building is neck and neck with The Bear, its stars Steve Martin and Martin Short engaged in a friendly competition in the Best Actor in a Comedy race.

The Globes voters reliably throw a few curveballs — in this case, dredging up Love & Death from the realm of forgotten 2023 TV shows to nominate Elizabeth Olsen’s lead performance (which, to be fair, was good; the show itself was nowhere near as consistent). Fargo managed to join the race, despite premiering its fifth season less than a month ago — but Jon Hamm and Juno Temple’s performances aren’t to be denied. Only one of the Yellowjackets crew was singled out for Best Supporting Actress in Drama, but that’s as crowded of a field as any — Ayo Edebiri, Quinta Brunson (the reigning champ), and Natasha Lyonne are just three of the nominees for Best Actress in a Comedy!

Along with learning the winners, viewers may have to wait until the January 7 air date to find out who’s hosting the Globes — as of the time of this writing, no one had answered the call. CNN reports the search for a host is still underway; sources tell the news outlet that Chris Rock, Will Arnett, and Jason Bateman have all declined. According to Puck News, Ali Wong, who is nominated for her performance in Beef, also turned down the gig. But hey, the booziest night in awards season was often host-free in the ’90s and early aughts, so this shouldn’t be the biggest hurdle that the first post-HFPA Globes ceremony has to clear.
